A Tim Burton Halloween

Finally got around to working on my costume for Yumi's Tim Burton themed Halloween-Birthday party.

I've decided that I'm going as the Corpse Bride.  I have not seen the movie but I'm going to base the costume on these photos that I have found around the web.

It took me forever to figure out how to sew the bodice.  I think it's pretty close to the actual one - the V along the lower body could be a little sharper but I'm not going to even worry about it.  I based it on a vintage Butterick pattern I found on etsy.
Now I'm waiting for all the fabric paint to dry before I assemble the veil and try on the bodice with the rib cage detail.  I have to wait 4 hours... and I'm not a patient person. I have to get the entire costume finished today !!

 HURRY AND DRY!!!

Highlights of our SDCC 2012 trip

This year my Super Hero cousins joined us the San Diego Comic Con.
It was their first time and they were beyond excited.

One of my favorite costumes this time around had to be this Princess Leia and Hans Solo couple.  Isn't she the prettiest ;) ?

We went to Wootstock.
We spent the night on the sidewalk to make sure that we would get in for the 10 year Firefly Reunion panel.
I snuck a pillow out from our hotel to make my stay on the sidewalk a little more comfortable :)

I complained and complained about how uncomfortable the sidewalk was but then ended up having a good time making friends and chatting with everyone around us.  The surprise was that I got to meet Joss Whedon.  He showed up at 3am to say "Hi" to everyone and to thank the fans for all their support.
Adam Baldwin also came by... I wish I had my Jayne hat on.
We waited a total of 13 hours.  Believe it or not, it went by faster than we thought.  Here's a picture of Nick in his Jayne hat... we are still in line but now it's daylight and we have moved inside the convention hall.
The fun part for me was the panel before Firefly was "Legend of Korra".  They did a live reading, they had the audience participate by making sound effects, they showed us a sneak peak of next years episodes and new costumes.
Korra's remains pretty much the same - she now has longer arm guards and her top looks much more like a cheongsam
This would be super easy for me to make the next year...
I'm also thinking about making Asami's - her aviator outfit is way cool !!
So after Korra came our long awaited Firefly panel. The cheering that went on during this emotional reunion...
After this panel, we thought that Comic Con couldn't get any better...but it did!
We enjoyed the rest of the convention buying way too many t-shirts and bumping into random celebrities.
We saw Ginnifer Goodwin from "Once Upon a Time".  I've only watched a couple of episodes but we loved her in "Big Love".  She's super adorable.

We bumped into the talented Felicia Day at Starbucks.  Nick was like "How did you recognize her ???"
We bumped into Joshua Jackson from Fringe at our hotel. He will always be "Pacey" to me from Dawson's Creek.  He's also really hot...(haha).
And finally our favorite - we bumped into Patrick Rothfuss in the convention hall.  We FREAKING LOVE him and his King Killer Chronicles.  I was so excited I turned into a blabber mouth.

This is supposed to be a tough guy pose... Pat (yes..I'm going to call him Pat like I really know him) was doing a great job. Nick, on the other hand...

The debut of my Legend of Korra Costume at SDCC

I had so much fun running around the convention in my costume, and it was so fun to bump into the many "Korras" in the main hall.  It was definitely one of the popular costumes this year.

I also happened to bump into my "previous " self ... Aang from the Last Airbender

More progress on Legend of Korra costume

I worked quite a bit on my costume this week.  I wanted to just let the top go and move on but the collar was just bugging the sh*t out of me. It looked off...so I redid the entire thing. I'm glad I did because now it's a major improvement and it actually looks more like Korra's top.

Next came her decorative arm band. It was also another pain in the butt. The little triangles were so much work to sew.
Something so small took over 2 hours to make. Thank goodness it had a dark decorative trim on the top and the bottom because it hid all the uneveness.
The pants were the easiest part to sew. They are so comfortable that I might even use them as pyjamas after the convention :) I actually used the bottom of the Kwik Sew 2943 pattern.  I just omitted the front zipper and instead of a pull string waist, I just used an elastic band. I also added elastic bands at the cuff of each pant leg.

So this is where I am now.  I only have the blue skirt, the trim on the UGG boots and the hair ornaments left to do. I should be done by the end of the week.

Legend of Korra costume : Korra's top

I decided to go ahead and make the costume, whether I wear it a Comic Con is another matter.  I didn't want to use Lycra and have it look like a bodysuit, so I went with a twill type fabric with some stretch. It's much thicker than Lycra so it will have some structure and will be able to hold my fat in.

This top was definitely a pain in the butt to make. I had to adjust and re-adjust over 30 times. I nearly gave up.

I started with the Kwik Sew pattern 2943.

This was definitely the wrong pattern to use. The sleeveless turtleneck is very boxy and very loose.  Even when I used the S size (and I'm usually closer to a L in everday tops) it was HUGE and very non flattering. I had to add darts, reshape the waist, take in the shoulders, reshape the turtleneck and change the shape of the armholes. What a PAIN!!

After 3 days I'm finally done and quite happy with the final product.

The 2nd version is definitely much better than my first one.
